Black Girls RUN! for women’s health

Looking for a local running group for women who are all about giving back? Join the BGR! Nation!

Thirty-One Gives is so proud (and super excited!) to help spread the word about Virginia-based Black Girls RUN! – a national organization dedicated to improving health and wellness for all women by incorporating running as part of a healthy lifestyle.

On a mission to improve women’s health

Black Girls RUN! was created in 2009 “in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners.” BGR! notes that African-American women have the highest rates of overweight and obesity of any group in the U.S.: According to the Centers for Disease Control, four out of every five African-American women are overweight or obese.

BGR! strives to create a movement to lower that 80% figure for African-American women, in turn lowering the number of women with diabetes, heart disease, stroke and other associated chronic diseases for which an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle are risk factors.

Its mission is to encourage all women – especially African-American women – to make fitness and healthy living a priority in their busy lives.

We at Thirty-One are especially pumped that this group of like-minded women chooses to partner with Girls on the Run, an empowerment program for girls in grades 3 through 8 that shares a yearlong partnership with Thirty-One Gives. Together, we’re helping transform young lives with this amazing organization by inspiring girls to find joy, health and confidence through running.
